Simple ideas for some easy homemade hair conditioners

October 15, 2018

There are many ingredients which you may already have at home that work wonders for the hair and can be used as simple but highly effective hair conditioners or hair rinses. These can often be used as a weekly or monthly hair treatment and are very easy and cost effective to make.

The following are a few suggestions which you can try, adapt amounts to suit hair length so you may need more or less than the suggested amounts. Please only use ingredients you know you have no known allergies to.

Honey & Olive Oil - Mix 2 tablespoons of raw honey with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and warm for a few seconds in a microwave (be careful not to overheat!). Apply to clean, washed hair and leave for 5-15 minutes. If you hair is super dry you may then find after rinsing your hair is nicely conditioned. Or you can then apply some more shampoo to help rinse out the additional oil but you will still be left with lovely soft, smooth hair.

If you do not wish to use honey, simply omit this and use the olive oil on its own. Olive oil is rich in vitamins A & E and antioxidants. It is often used to help dandruff, repair damaged hair, moisturise and strengthen hair.

Jojoba Oil - Just apply a few drops of jojoba oil to clean, washed hair and smoth down to the tips. Style as normal. Jojoba Oil is rich in vitamins C,B and E and can help to moisturise, strengthen and thicken hair.

Coconut Oil - Great for dry, frizzy hair & issues such as dandruff. This is also good for a deep conditioning hair treatment. Gently warm a few tablespoons of coconut oil and appy to clean, washed hair. Wrap hair in a towel (a warm towel works even better) then leave for up to 20 mins. Then wash the coconut oil out.

Castor Oil - Deeply moisturising and can help improve the condition of hair and is said to promote hair growth. Apply a few tablespoons of castor oil to freshly washed hair and leave for 5-10 minutes. Wash out with a mild shampoo. Castor Oil has natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Clarifying Bicarbonate of Soda and Apple Cider Vinegar Hair treatments- Mix one tablespoon of bicarbonate of soda with 3 tablespoons of water and massage the paste into the hair. Leave for just a few minutes.Rinse out with a dillution of 1 part apple cider vinegar to 2 or 3 parts of warm water. This method can be used once a month to deep cleanse and clarify the hair.

Coconut Milk - Take some coconut milk and mix your required amount with a couple of tablespoons of any moisturising oil of your choice (for example, olive oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil etc). Carefully pour the mixture over clean hair and massage in.Rinse out. Coconut milk is rich in fatty acids that help to moisturise and nourish the hair.

Rice Water hair rinse - rice water is often used to balance the hair and scalp, add shine and condition the hair.Rice water contains amino acids said to help make the hair soft and silky.Simply add a cup of  rice to a bowl and cover with water.Leave to soak, stirring occasionally. After 15-20 mins, strain the water from the rice into a jug and use this water to rinse over clean hair. This is gentle enough to be used everytime you wash your hair. If you have recently cooked some rice in water, you can also use this water (strained and left to cool).Save the water and use for rinsing the hair. Please note that any product made with water can only be used that day or left overs stored in the fridge and used the next day. Never use after that length of time due to no preservatives being added.

Please feel free to try any of these methods but do so at your own risk. If in doubt.always try a patch taste first. Even all natural ingredients do not suit every person.

But most of all, have some fun,see if something works well for you and keep a record of it so that you can remember what to use again.
